Heather Nelson
Mixed-media

As a keen observer and lover of nature, Heather has always been inspired by the shapes and colours in it. Years ago, this inspiration ted her to the studio of the late Elizabeth Fraser Williamson, where she studied sculpture.

Apart from that training, Heather is mostly self-taught, taking various courses in painting, drawing, but generally experimenting on her own using different mediums. Heather combines her sculpting knowledge with her other skills to create imaginative wall hangings and unusual free-form objects in a variety of mediums, always pushing the envelope, trying new mediums.

Heather and her husband moved permanently to their shoreline cottage on Washburn Island about nine years ago.  Her pieces have appeared locally in such places as the Boyd Gallery in Bobcaygeon in 2006, and the Bobcaygeon 2008 celebrations.

Heather's ideas come mostly in the wee hours of the night, waking her and getting her up very early to excitedly "get at if. She also enjoys the challenge of commissioned work and takes pleasure in creating "that special something" for a client.

Artist's Statement
My passion for working with shapes has been lifelong. As a young child, I took over my Dear Dad's workbench, making pieces out of plastiscine, bits of wire, and then clay. Sculpting lessons followed in earnest later.

In recent years, I have been experimenting in combining my love of sculpting with that of my design and sewing skills. It has been an exciting blend, leading me to the making of imaginative wall hangings, fibre mats, and free form objects using various mixed textiles and mediums. The possibilities are endless!
