I grew up in the fifties, and like many children I loved to have someone read to me. Those story books drew me into the artistry of their illustrations. As a child, I loved to draw, although there was not much time for dilly-dallying.
My favourite presents were crayons, paper and colouring books. Oh the smell of those Crayola crayons! I can remember it even now, just as if they were still in my hands. The colours could be mixed to achieve the best results.
The Bay of Quinte became my summer home. The pictures I would paint in my head were of lakes, islands, water lilies, frogs, boats, sunrises, sunsets, farms, kittens, cows, boat houses, cottages and the list goes on forever. I was in heaven
Life sometimes has a way of taking over and I did not have the opportunity to express myself on paper till some fifty years later.
Retirement can be wonderful
A new and renewed passion emerged. “Look out world here I come!” The summer of 2008, my garden came alive on paper, not with crayons, but with really beautiful water colours. That summer my relatives went to Malta on vacation and returned with a small photographic book of famous landmarks. The pictures were so unlike anything I had ever seen before; I just had to paint them. Some pictures turned out to be not too bad. My husband, the carver and my biggest fan, egged me on, as did other caring souls. In the fall I had an opportunity to work in a beautiful sun lit art gallery. I breathed in artistic creations every time I entered and it got me emotionally charged.
As a result I took art lessons from Pauline Stephenson, Dorothy Bond and a few from Elke Clarke. I continue to learn and expand my horizons
Water s Edge paintings were born at A Gift of Art Gallery in Newcastle, Ontario in the summer of 2009. |
