Steve Kubien has been working with wood for over 25 years, beginning with building Cub Cars with his Dad. Making mostly coat racks and bookshelves, he discovered woodturning and the lathe about 3 years ago. His “flat work” tools have been left dormant. Now he harnesses his energy towards woodturning and creating functional works of art. His bowls are meant to be used, preferably while entertaining friends and family.
“I have always loved wood in all of its forms whether a finished table, elegant bowl or as standing timber in a mature forest (my favourite). It is a fantastic medium for expressing ones creativity.” Steve has never voiced anything about “artistic vision” or letting the wood “speak” to him. When discussing such ideas, he had this to say; “Wood is beautiful. It adds warmth and class to any environment and it just feels good to the touch. Hey, it’s just fun to work with!”
Steve lives in Ajax, Ontario with his wife Julie and 2 daughters. He is often the provider of a good laugh and simply wants to be known as a loyal friend with a big heart. He exercises his mind and spirit by studying jodo, a 400 year old Japanese martial art. |
