Florence Chik-Lau
Sculptor

A graduate of the Ontario College of Art and Design, Florence Chik-Lau was a graphic designer in Toronto for many years. Since moving to Prince Edward County, she started to use clay as her artistic medium. Her work is influenced by her her peaceful, rural surroundings and her love of animals. Florence's animal sculptures are pure in form and engaging in personality. Each one is a unique and somewhat childlike character yet full of wisdom, warmth, tenderness and humour. Her goal is to capture the spirits and the character of the animals while giving them endearing human qualities.

Individually sculpted from slabs of clay, her animal sculptures are hand stained, glazed and fired in an electric kiln. The surface is sometimes silky and soft, and sometimes textured and rough. As all her sculptures are completely crafted by hand without the use of molds, each one is an original and no two are exactly alike.

It is her hope that her animal sculptures will intrigue, delight and remind us of the beauty that exists in all creatures great and small.

Florence Chik-Lau has recently received several awards.
During the Art in the County, Prince Edward County Arts Council awarded her the "Jurors award" and the "People Choice Award"
Through the Eastern Ontario Artists Market Place Florence won a place at the recent Spring One of a King Show in Toronto including a financial bursary to help defray expenses. Currently her work has been accepted
and is being shown at the Snapdragon Gallery in Ottawa. Her work is also available for sale at the Gardiner Ceramic Museum Shop in Toronto.
